The Report of Pharmacovigilance Awareness Program

(14-5-2011)

Pharmacovigilance Awareness Programme was held on 14th May 2011 in Lecture Hall – 1 of PDU medical college between 11.00 am to 1.00 pm. It was attended by more than 100 faculties and resident doctors of PDU medical college and hospital.

The programme was intiated by the introductory speech of Dr. Pramod Kumar, Dean and was followed by the speech of Dr. J.G. Buch, who gave brief idea about the importance of pharmacovigilance in our country. After that, Dr. Darshan Dave, Assistant Professor, Pharmacology, PDU Medical College,
Rajkot presented an overview of Pharmacovigilance. He explained various terminologies in the pharmacovigilance, history of the pharmacogilance and need of pharmacovigilance (for the newly introducing drugs as well as for the older established drugs). He addressed the global scenario of adverse drug reaction (ADR) monitoring as well the National Pharmacovigilance Programme of India. It was followed by the lecture of Dr. Chetna Desai, Additional Professor, BJ Medical College, Ahmedabad who explained different methods of ADR reporting especially spontaneous voluntary reporting. She also explained how to notify the adverse drug reaction by giving the practical example of one case report. Adverse drug event reporting form was given to all the participants and detailed explanation was given regarding the filling up of the form.

At the end of this seminar it was decided that:

1.    Training of resident doctors as well as paramedical staff (especially nursing staff) will be conducted in the near future.

2.    For effective implementation of this program, it was also decided that one resident doctor/assistant professor of each clinical department will work in liaison with one faculty member of the pharmacology department nominated by the head of department of pharmacology.

3.    It was also suggested that in the initial stage, ADR reporting form may be prepared in local language to make it more acceptable for the nursing staff.
